Borehole Sustainable Yield Tests for Groundwater Supply Training

SADC-GMI is once again offering the Borehole Yield Tests for Groundwater Supply Training Course

Overview

It is essential for individuals owning boreholes to ascertain the maximum discharge rate for pumping groundwater to ensure a consistent yield from their boreholes. This borehole yield, also known as sustainable, reliable, or safe yield, can be estimated through aquifer pumping tests. The estimation process involves conducting appropriate aquifer pumping tests and analyzing the data using suitable methods, considering factors such as the capacity of the aquifer system and groundwater needs. This training program covers the fundamental principles of designing, planning, and conducting borehole yield tests and the analysis of drawdown data. Real-life case studies will be utilized to comprehend flow characteristics and estimate borehole yield and a practical session will be incorporated, enabling participants to collect data at a borehole site for subsequent analysis in a classroom setting.

Who can benefit from the course? Hydrogeologists, Geohydrologists, Groundwater Consultants, Groundwater Scientists, WASH practitioners, Water supply Engineers, Hydrologists, Environmental practitioners, Water Use Practitioners, Pumping Test Technicians/ Data Collection Specialists

The benefits of attending are gaining theoretical and practical understanding of the following:

  • The role of borehole yield tests
  • Designing and planning for borehole yield tests
  • Estimation of well efficiencies and implications for borehole development- long-term operation cost
  • Field procedures for step-drawdown test and constant discharge rate aquifer pumping test
  • Selection and application of appropriate methods to analyze aquifer pumping test data from borehole yield test.

The three-day course will cost R10 000.00 per delegate.

The training fee per delegate is R10,000, covering expenses solely for course material and meals (tea and lunch) during the training session. Please note that transport and accommodation costs are not included in this amount. Interested candidates can deposit the registration fee to the following bank account and forward the proof of payment to Ms. Tebogo Poo at tebogo.poo@sadc-gmi.org :

Course Facilitator: Prof. Modreck Gomo

Modreck Gomo is an associate professor of groundwater at the Institute for Groundwater Studies, University of the Free State in South Africa. His first degree was a BSc Honours in Agricultural Engineering from the University of Zimbabwe, followed by a BSc Honours in Geohydrology (2008), an MSc in Geohydrology(2009), and a Ph.D. in Geohydrology (2011) from the University of the Free in South Africa. Professor Gomo has experience in various groundwater research and consultancy projects. He has contributed to various capacity-building training projects on groundwater and transboundary aquifers in the SADC region. He consistently publishes theoretical and practical work on various groundwater aspects to improve groundwater site characterization techniques. Prof. Gomo serves as an Editorial Board Member for Sustainable Water Resources Management (SWAM) and Discover Water journals. Professor Modreck Gomo is also a registered Professional Natural Scientist with the South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions (SACNASP) and a Professional member of the Groundwater Water Division of South Africa.
